Child behavioral changes may signal underlying emotional trauma

Psychologists suggest that behavioral changes in children, such as irritability, withdrawal, or sudden defiance, may serve as signals for underlying emotional trauma that the child cannot yet verbalize. Children in primary and early secondary school often lack the emotional vocabulary to express complex feelings like shame, loneliness, or disappointment.

When adults misinterpret these behaviors as mere stubbornness or lack of discipline, it can widen the gap between parents and children. Experts recommend that parents and schools create safe communication environments characterized by active listening and respect for a child's emotions to address these silent struggles before they escalate.
