Child death in Catanzaro tied to antibiotic‑linked C. difficile
An 18‑month‑old boy, Alessio Pio, died at a hospital in Catanzaro while investigations into the cause continue. Infection specialist Matteo Bassetti explained that the bacterium Clostridioides difficile, a Gram‑positive spore‑forming organism, can cause severe intestinal infections, especially after the use of broad‑spectrum antibiotics such as amoxicillin‑clavulanate. He described it as “the so‑called black man of the intestine” and warned that “it is taken after the use of antibiotics.” The risk is higher for vulnerable patients like very young children and the elderly. Transmission occurs easily through contact with fecal material, and the infection is not confined to hospitals but can also be acquired in the community. Bassetti emphasized the need for prudent antibiotic prescribing and proper diagnostic testing, including stool toxin analysis, if C. difficile is confirmed as the cause.
