Child development experts issue guidance on screen time limits

Experts and government bodies are providing guidance on managing children's screen time as digital integration increases in education and daily life. In the UK, government guidelines released in March 2026 recommend avoiding all screen time for children under 2, unless the activity fosters interaction between the caregiver and infant. For children aged 2 to 5, officials suggest avoiding screens during mealtimes and before bed.

In the United States, researchers from Florida International University highlight that parental stress often leads to a more relaxed attitude toward screen limits, particularly during summer breaks. Experts warn that failing to transition back to structured limits when the school year begins can negatively impact academic achievement, cognition, and attention control. Pediatric specialists suggest that family media plans should be dynamic, adjusting for different seasons and weekdays versus weekends, rather than adhering to a static daily hour limit.
