Child development: guidance on sports specialization and high abilities

Experts are providing guidance on identifying and managing specific developmental needs in children, ranging from physical activity to cognitive abilities.

The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) advises caution regarding early sports specialization. While physical activity is vital for growth, the SBP recommends that children engage in various activities rather than focusing on a single discipline too early. Concentrating on one sport with high-intensity training can increase the risk of overuse injuries and athletic burnout.

Regarding cognitive development, specialists note that high abilities in children do not always manifest as top academic grades. Characteristics such as intense curiosity, advanced vocabulary, and creative problem-solving are key indicators. However, conditions like ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder can sometimes mask giftedness, and children may appear disinterested if they lack sufficient academic challenges.
