Child health experts advise on seasonal transitions and school readiness

Medical experts are providing guidance for families as children transition from summer to autumn and prepare for the new school year.

Dr. Mehmet Erkan Altuncu from Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital warns that seasonal changes in September can lead to increased respiratory infections, coughs, and sore throats due to temperature fluctuations. He advises parents to dress children appropriately for morning and evening chills, ensure they do not remain in sweaty clothes, and maintain hygiene to prevent infection. Supporting the immune system through balanced nutrition—including fruits, vegetables, and proteins—and adequate hydration is also recommended.

Additionally, Dr. Abdullah Sert of Biruni University Faculty of Medicine emphasizes the importance of restoring sleep schedules. To avoid fatigue, attention issues, and decreased learning performance, he suggests that parents should not wait until the first day of school to adjust sleep patterns. Instead, bedtime and wake-up times should be gradually moved earlier over several days to help children's biological clocks adapt to the school routine.
