Colombia regional updates: Environmental appointments, housing trends, and academic elections

Various regional developments are reported across Colombia. In Boyacá, Luis Giovanny Salinas Rozo has assumed his role as the regional director of the Corporación Autónoma Regional de Cundinamarca (CAR) in Chiquinquirá. He will oversee environmental management for six municipalities, including Chiquinquirá, Saboyá, and Ráquira.

In the academic sector, the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC) has finalized its list of 11 candidates for the 2027-2030 rector position. Debates for the candidates are scheduled to begin in late October across various university campuses.

In Bogotá, the social interest housing (VIS) market has seen significant growth. Between September 2025 and September 2026, the city sold 38,853 units, an 18% increase that contrasts with a 12% decline in the rest of the country. This growth is attributed to local housing policies.

Meanwhile, a safety incident occurred at the Instituto Termal del Paipa (ITP), where a young girl was hospitalized in Duitama after receiving an electric shock from a metal lamp post. The ITP stated it is reviewing security measures. Additionally, discussions continue regarding a new decree aimed at regulating social protests in the country.
