Child malnutrition remains a major health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa

Malnutrition among children under five remains a persistent public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. A review of 50 studies published between 2015 and 2025 indicates that malnutrition is a complex issue driven by factors beyond simple food scarcity, including disease, poor sanitation, climate pressures, limited healthcare access, and socio-cultural factors.

Undernutrition—specifically stunting, wasting, and being underweight—is the primary form of malnutrition identified in the region. Stunting was noted as the most frequently reported condition. Researchers suggest that lasting solutions must move beyond food aid to integrate nutrition support with broader actions addressing poverty, food systems, health, and community needs.
