Child nutrition initiatives expand in Bhutan and Thailand
Efforts to improve child nutrition are expanding in Bhutan and Thailand through targeted health initiatives and school-based food programs.
In Bhutan, a report by the Ministry of Health and UNICEF highlights a ‘triple burden of malnutrition’ consisting of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and rising obesity. While stunting among children under five decreased from 33.5% in 2010 to 17.9% in 2023, overweight rates among those aged five to 19 tripled to 18% in 2022. The report notes that many adolescents consume fast food and sugary drinks, leading to deficiencies in vitamin D, B12, and iron.
In Thailand, Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) is expanding its ‘Eggs for Next Gen’ program to 1,030 schools. The initiative aims to combat food poverty and stunting by providing schools with poultry houses, equipment, and technical training to produce fresh eggs locally. The program seeks to ensure consistent access to quality protein while teaching students agricultural skills and creating sustainable food production cycles.
