Observatorio del Juego Infantil Calls for Right to Play in Climate Policies
The Observatorio del Juego Infantil has presented the manifesto “El juego no se va de vacaciones,” urging a debate on guaranteeing children’s right to play during the summer and incorporating that right into urban, social and climate‑adaptation policies. The document, released after a prior campaign that highlighted the lack of outdoor play spaces, outlines ten commitments for administrations, urban planners, educators and citizens, including increasing shaded areas, opening schoolyards where possible, creating climate shelters, involving children in public‑space design and promoting play alternatives that reduce screen dependence.
The manifesto points to obstacles such as extreme heat, insufficient shade, closed school courtyards and a shortage of adapted spaces that limit outdoor play. It cites support from families, professionals and various organisations, and reminds that the right to play is recognised by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as essential for physical, emotional, cognitive and social development.
