Child-rearing costs vary sharply across major U.S. metros in 2026

A study by SmartAsset analyzing 48 major U.S. metropolitan areas has estimated the annual cost of raising a small child in a household with two working adults for 2026. The findings reveal significant geographic disparities in expenses related to childcare, food, medical care, and housing.

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont is identified as the most expensive metro area, with an estimated annual cost of $43,171. Memphis was found to be the most affordable, costing $19,922 annually.

Regarding year-over-year changes from 2025 to 2026, Indianapolis saw the most significant increase, with costs jumping 20.77%. Conversely, Richmond, Virginia, and Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk were the only two metro areas to see a decline in child-rearing costs, dropping by 1.91% and 1.21% respectively.
