Child safety and meningococcal disease symptom recognition

Health experts and safety guidelines are emphasizing proactive measures for child protection and disease recognition in Vietnam.

Regarding meningococcal disease, Dr. Ngo Van An from Medlatec General Hospital warns that symptoms can be easily mistaken for common flu or infections. However, the disease can progress to a critical state or cause death within 24 hours. Parents are advised to look beyond high fever and monitor for specific physical signs: intense leg or muscle pain, hands and feet that feel unusually cold despite a high fever, and skin discoloration such as paleness or purple mottled patterns.

In terms of general safety, parents are encouraged to teach children self-defense and situational awareness. Key strategies include instructing children not to open doors for strangers, ensuring they memorize important family contact numbers and addresses, teaching proper elevator usage, and reinforcing basic traffic safety rules like using pedestrian crossings.
