Child Trauma After Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack

A child and adolescent psychiatrist reported that five children who witnessed the Magdeburg Christmas market attack on December 20, 2024 are suffering severe psychological effects. The children, previously without behavioral issues, now display intense fear, panic attacks, shortness of breath, headaches, abdominal pain and chronic sleep disturbances. Their ability to function independently has been markedly impaired, requiring extensive family support.

The attack, in which a 50‑year‑old driver rammed a two‑ton vehicle through the market, killed six people—including a nine‑year‑old boy—and injured more than 300 others. The accused, Taleb Al‑Abdulmohsen, faces multiple homicide charges. The psychiatrist’s testimony highlights the long‑term developmental consequences for child witnesses of mass‑casualty events.
