Childcare safety concerns rise in Australia following ABC investigation

An investigation by ABC’s Four Corners has highlighted ongoing safety concerns in the early childhood education sector, featuring CCTV footage of an educator in remote Queensland physically mistreating an infant. The footage reportedly shows incidents occurring over several days in late August and early September 2024.

While recent legislative reforms have mandated that children’s safety and best interests take priority, and have increased penalties for breaches, challenges remain. Recent changes include a 24-hour window for reporting serious incidents, bans on staff devices, and the implementation of national staff registers.

Experts suggest the “four eyes” principle—requiring at least two educators to be visible to each other and children at all times—could improve safety. However, a nationwide shortage of early childhood educators, particularly in regional and rural areas, makes implementing such measures difficult for many services.
