Childhood Asthma Spotlight: Irish Webinar and Scottish School Admission Surge

The Asthma Society of Ireland has released a recording of its Childhood Asthma webinar, part of Asthma Awareness Week 2026. Hosted by CEO Eilís Ní Chaithnía, the session featured paediatric respiratory consultant Dr Louisa Owens, respiratory nurse Ruth Morrow and covered diagnosis, treatment options such as MART, inhaler technique, exercise safety and emergency response, aiming to empower parents and reduce hospital visits.

Separately, Asthma + Lung UK Scotland warns that hospital admissions for children with asthma rise sharply when pupils return to school. Data show 55 admissions in July 2025, 73 in August and 146 in September, more than double the July figure. The charity attributes the increase to disrupted preventer inhaler routines and seasonal triggers like viruses and dust. Scotland’s Public Health Minister Maree Todd highlighted the National Severe Asthma Pathway and new guidance allowing schools to keep spare salbutamol inhalers for emergencies.
