Childhood mortality risks highlighted following tragedy in Balcarce
A two-year-old child died after drowning in a swimming pool in Balcarce, Argentina. Emergency responders and police attended the scene, and despite resuscitation efforts at the Felipe Fossati Municipal Hospital, the child passed away. Local authorities have opened a judicial investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
Medical experts and the Argentine Society of Pediatrics (SAP) emphasize that drowning and choking are leading preventable causes of death in children under five. In 2023, Argentina recorded 48 deaths of children under five due to drowning, averaging one death per week. Drowning incidents often occur in domestic settings, including bathtubs, buckets, and toilets, and can happen silently with very little water.
Additionally, medical professionals warn that choking is a major accidental cause of death for children under 13. High-risk items include whole grapes, sausages, nuts, hard candies, small toys, balloons, and batteries. Experts recommend constant supervision, cutting food into small pieces, and knowing proper emergency protocols to prevent fatal outcomes.
