American Academy of Pediatrics warns heavy school backpacks can strain children's bodies

Health experts say overloaded school backpacks – packed with textbooks, laptops, tablets, water bottles and sports gear – can put unnecessary strain on growing bodies. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes signs such as a child leaning forward, difficulty walking or shoulder straps digging into skin. Dr. Sadika Kendi, who chairs the academy’s injury‑prevention efforts, cautions that back injuries are uncommon but can become severe if a child trips while carrying a heavy bag. She also points out that the often‑cited guideline of backpacks weighing no more than 10‑15 % of a child’s body weight lacks solid evidence, recommending families keep loads as light as possible and remove non‑essential items.

Teachers echo the advice. In Phoenix, history teacher Samantha Ness advises parents to audit daily supplies and avoid letting backpacks become “purses” for makeup or gadgets. German pediatric association BVKJ stresses a similar weight limit, promotes active commuting on foot, roller or bike, and advises against giving children smartphones before age nine. In Japan, Murase Kabanko and Chukyo University have launched a joint study to measure how different school bags affect posture, walking speed and body strain, aiming to inform future product design and improve children’s commuting experience.

Across the United States, Germany and Japan, officials and educators urge parents to prioritize essential school items, encourage regular physical activity and monitor backpack load to protect children’s musculoskeletal health.
