Children’s Drowning Risk Prompts Calls for Constant Adult Supervision
Pediatric experts in France and the United States warn that drowning remains the leading cause of fatal accidents for children, especially during summer holidays. French paediatrician Célia Levavasseur stresses that entrusting a child to watch another child near water is a dangerous habit among grandparents, urging a single adult to remain continuously vigilant. She also recommends modern flotation garments integrated into swimwear as an additional safety measure.
In the United States, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes a recent rise in child drowning deaths, citing 865 fatalities in 2024 compared with 756 in 2019. The increase is linked to reduced swimming lessons during the COVID‑19 pandemic and a shortage of lifeguards. Experts stress the importance of fully fenced pools, locked gates, early swimming lessons, and uninterrupted adult supervision to prevent these preventable tragedies.
