Child's Death in Tropea Linked to Suspected Clostridium difficile Infection

An 18‑month‑old child from Tropea, Calabria, died on 17 July 2026 after developing severe gastroenteritis. The child was first admitted to the emergency department of Vibo Valentia Hospital, then transferred to the pediatric ward in Catanzaro, where death occurred despite supportive care. Four other children from the same nursery showed similar symptoms; one recovered. The parents filed a complaint with the prosecutor, prompting epidemiological, microbiological and judicial investigations into a possible Clostridium difficile infection. Dr. Fabrizio Pregliasco, virologist at the University of Milan, cautioned that “the causes of the Tropea episode must be clarified by ongoing investigations and it is essential to avoid automatic links to a single cause.” Angelo Vittorio Sestito, extraordinary commissioner of the ASP of Vibo Valentia, confirmed the death to ANSA, announced precautionary hospitalization of another child, and said regional health authorities are reviewing procedures to ensure compliance with standard operating protocols.
