Chile addresses energy transition and rural electrification challenges
An international seminar organized by SERC Chile, CENTRA UAI, and the CALDO Consortium addressed the regulatory barriers and electrical market changes required to advance electrification in industry and transport. Following significant growth in renewable generation, Chilean Energy Minister Ximena Rincón emphasized the necessity of shifting these advancements toward final energy consumption to increase efficiency and autonomy amidst geopolitical tensions and fossil fuel market volatility.
In the Arica y Parinacota region, the Ministry of Energy, the Municipality of Camarones, and CGE have established a roadmap to extend the electrical grid to the rural localities of Chitita, Cerro Blanco, and Ofragía. Technical discussions focused on the feasibility of interconnecting these areas, which are located approximately 3 to 4 kilometers from the nearest supply point. The project may proceed through an extension of the concession zone, with upcoming field visits planned to determine the best routing and resource management.
