Cerro Tarapacá sidewalk and road replacement project reaches 77% completion

The municipal works to replace sidewalks and road surfaces in the Cerro Tarapacá sector of Alto Hospicio have progressed to 77% of the planned work. The initiative, financed by the National Regional Development Fund (FNDR) and carried out by Aguas del Altiplano under a joint agreement with the Regional Government of Tarapacá, includes the installation of 3.3 km of drinking‑water mains and 2.3 km of sewer lines to address the area's saline soils.

During a recent inspection by the regional council’s oversight commission, officials highlighted that the project will repave 5,503 m² of sidewalks and 23,282 m² of road surface, using a special oscillating pavement system designed to improve durability on the challenging terrain. The work aims to enhance connectivity, road safety and overall quality of life for local residents.

Regional councilor Sergio Asserella emphasized that the improvements respond to long‑standing issues such as ground subsidence and demolition orders for unsafe structures, and that the upgraded water and sewer infrastructure is essential for the longevity of the pavement works.
