Chile advances digital economy through payment growth and government interoperability

Chile is experiencing a significant digital transformation in both its financial and governmental sectors. According to the Central Bank of Chile, the country recorded over 7,700 million digital payments in the last year, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This growth is driven by technologies such as contactless cards, digital wallets, and the widespread use of BancoEstado’s CuentaRUT. This digital shift is projected to contribute $740 million to Chile's GDP by 2028 and could integrate 83,000 people into the formal financial system.

Simultaneously, the OECD has ranked Chile among the ten most advanced digital governments in the world. This recognition is based on the country's robust digital architecture, including massive interoperability and data governance. The State's Electronic Services Interoperability Platform (PISEE) currently integrates over 560 public agencies, processing more than 550 million annual transactions. While the underlying infrastructure is highly advanced, the full digitalization of citizen-facing procedures remains a work in progress as the country works toward mandates for electronic administration.
