Chile advances electromobility with new bus technologies

In Valdivia, Chile, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications has begun installing electronic payment systems on new zero-emission electric buses. This initiative aims to modernize public transport by phasing out cash payments and integrating technological advancements with private investment in electric fleets.

As Chile expands its electric mobility, particularly with large fleets of electric buses in Santiago, concerns are rising regarding the management of retired batteries. Experts suggest that batteries no longer suitable for vehicles can be repurposed for a ‘second life,’ such as storing solar energy or providing backup power for buildings. However, establishing regulatory frameworks for testing, certifying, and safely managing these batteries is a critical upcoming challenge for the country.
