Chile advances management of protected areas through SBAP transition

Chile is implementing new management frameworks for its protected areas as part of the transition from the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) to the new Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP).

In the Los Ríos Region, authorities presented a Regional Operational Continuity Plan to ensure that parks and reserves maintain functionality during the administrative handover scheduled for March 1, 2027. The plan aims to identify essential tasks and address potential gaps in personnel, infrastructure, and equipment.

In the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, the first Management Council for Kawésqar National Park has been established. This council includes CONAF and 16 Kawésqar communities, covering 2.8 million hectares. The group will work on a management agreement for the area, a move intended to recognize the ancestral and spiritual ties of indigenous peoples to the territory under the framework of Law No. 21,600.
