Chile and Argentina prisons experience escape attempt and fire incident

In Talca, Chile, two convicted inmates tried to escape from the Centro de Cumplimiento Penitenciario by carving a 37 cm by 35 cm hole in their cell. Prison staff detected the breach, activated contingency plans and recaptured the prisoners without injury. The inmates were separated from the general population, transferred to another facility and a police investigation was launched.

In Victoria, Argentina, a fight among inmates in Unit 5 of the prison led to a mattress being set alight, producing a dense column of smoke. Prison personnel quickly extinguished the fire and restored order. No injuries or significant material damage were reported, and authorities are investigating the cause of the altercation.
