Chile and Belgium mining disasters commemorated in August

On 5 August 2010, a collapse at the San José mine near Copiapó, Chile, trapped 33 miners about 700 metres underground. The miners survived for 69 days in harsh conditions before an international rescue team successfully brought them to the surface, an event that drew worldwide attention.

On 8 August 1956, a fire and explosion at the Bois du Cazier (Marcinelle) mine in Belgium killed 274 miners, including 136 Italians. The disaster highlighted unsafe working conditions and prompted reforms in mining safety across Europe. The tragedy remains a somber reminder of the risks faced by miners and the importance of stringent safety measures.
