Chile and Mexico inaugurate coastal protection walls to safeguard beaches

The Chilean Ministry of Public Works opened a new concrete coastal protection wall at Playa Bellavista in Iquique. The emergency project, built 15 metres inland from the old barrier, restores security to the shoreline after damage from December 2024 sea‑level surges and an earthquake, and recovers roughly 800 square metres of beach for local residents.

In Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, Mexico, the municipal government announced the start of actions to conserve the dunes and order land concessions along the eight‑kilometre stretch of Playa Miramar. The plan includes hiring services for integral shoreline conservation, updating a census of federal maritime‑terrestrial zones, and coordinating with the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas to ensure sustainable development of the beach.

Both initiatives aim to strengthen coastal resilience, protect natural barriers, and preserve recreational spaces for the communities that rely on them.
