Chile and Mexico launch community-led landscape restoration projects
Six communes in Chile's O’Higgins Region have started a participatory process to draft a ten‑year Secano Costero Nilahue Local Restoration Plan. Led by regional environment minister José Pablo Lagos, the initiative held four citizen workshops in Litueche, Marchigüe, Pichilemu and Paredones and will add two more in Navidad and Pumanque, aiming to set priorities, actions and governance for ecosystem recovery.
In Mexico's Yucatán state, the Secretariat of Sustainable Development signed a collaboration agreement with the Red Mexicana de Organizaciones Campesinas Forestales (Red Mocaf) and the international NGO Forest Trends to implement a jurisdictional REDD+ strategy. The pact, signed by Secretary Neyra Silva Rosado, Red Mocaf President Gustavo Sánchez Valle and Forest Trends representative Débora Batista, follows a capacity‑building workshop attended by officials from federal, state and local agencies. With roughly 75 % of Yucatán covered by forest, the program seeks to cut emissions from deforestation and promote sustainable forest management.
The Chilean municipality of Loncoche, together with the National Forest Corporation (CONAF), will create 14 multipurpose bosquets on land belonging to smallholders in the Indigenous Territorial Development Program. The project will plant about 2 800 native trees, providing timber, non‑timber products and ecosystem services such as soil protection, water regulation and carbon sequestration, while diversifying rural incomes.
