Chile and Mexico move to cap public officials' pay

In Chile, lawmakers are advancing a bill known as “Super Sueldos” that would set a ceiling on the highest salaries paid to public officials. The proposal, originally backed by former President Gabriel Boric and now presented by Senator Manuel José Ossandón, aims to standardise top remuneration without reducing current earnings, and has the backing of Chamber President Jorge Alessandri and Senate President Paulina Núñez. The measure is awaiting further discussion in the commission of Regimen.

In Mexico, Governor Luisa María Alcalde announced that no pension may exceed the salary of the President, effectively ending the so‑called “golden pensions.” The new rule applies the most favorable calculation for existing retirees but caps benefits at the constitutional limit, which matches the president’s salary. Alcalde said the reform has saved roughly 5 billion pesos.
