Chile and Norway propose new regulations for victim protection and privacy

In Chile, the Minister of Women and Gender Equality, Judith Marín, introduced the ‘Reinforced Precautionary Measures’ bill to the Chamber of Deputies. The legislation aims to strengthen protections for victims of domestic and gender-based violence by addressing digital harassment and preventing the destruction of telemetric monitoring devices. The initiative follows reports indicating that 20.8% of femicides in 2024 occurred while the perpetrators had active precautionary measures in place. The bill seeks to improve coordination between institutions and expand the oversight capabilities of municipal security.

In Norway, the Minister of Digitalization and Government Administration, Karianne Tung, is considering a ban on smart glasses equipped with cameras and microphones. The government aims to regulate wearable recording devices, such as those produced by Meta, to prevent unauthorized surveillance in public spaces. Tung noted that the government may also look into prohibiting facial recognition in public areas and regulating other camera-enabled accessories like headphones and hats to protect individual privacy.
