Chile and Panama health ministries warn of respiratory infections

Chile's health authority urged the community to intensify preventive measures following the La Tirana pilgrimage, which has been linked to a rise in respiratory illnesses such as flu, COVID‑19 and common colds. Health minister Rodrigo Medina recommended frequent hand‑washing, covering coughs, wearing masks when symptomatic, avoiding crowded indoor spaces, ensuring ventilation, and getting the influenza vaccine, which remains available through public and private providers.

Panama's Ministry of Health issued a similar advisory focused on the seasonal increase of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Officials highlighted that RSV typically spreads during the rainy season and can cause serious bronchiolitis in infants under two, especially those born prematurely or with underlying conditions. Parents were told to monitor symptoms, maintain hydration, use saline nasal washes, and seek medical attention for warning signs, while most cases resolve with basic home care.
