Chile and South Korea implement maritime security agreement

Chile and South Korea are moving forward with the implementation of a maritime security cooperation agreement. Officials from the Chilean Embassy in Seoul and the South Korean Coast Guard met to discuss practical steps for the pact.

The agreement aims to enhance maritime security and promote professional exchange between the South Korean Coast Guard and Chile’s Directorate General of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (Directemar). Key areas of focus include combating illegal fishing, protecting maritime routes, and addressing organized crime, specifically drug trafficking through maritime channels.

Chilean Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Fernando Cabrera noted that the initiative was developed to address narcotics flows originating from Asia through information sharing and mutual cooperation.
