Chile and Spain advance synthetic fuel strategies for energy transition
Chile is advancing its decarbonization strategy through the development of synthetic fuels. A pilot project named SynFuels Biobío, located at an ARAUCO plant in the Biobío Region, integrates green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ to create low-impact energy sources. Managed by Bioforest, the initiative aims to provide viable alternatives for heavy transport, maritime, and aviation sectors where electrification is difficult. The project seeks to validate technical and economic viability within a real industrial context, positioning Chile as a key player in the hydrogen economy.
In Spain, the government has approved Royal Decree 611/2026 to accelerate the decarbonization of the transport sector. This regulation establishes a framework through 2040 to promote the use of renewable electricity, hydrogen, biogas, and synthetic fuels. The measure addresses the high dependency on petroleum, which accounts for approximately 47% of Spain's total energy consumption, driven largely by road, aviation, and maritime transport.
