Chile and Tierra del Fuego enhance seismic risk prevention

Authorities from Chile and Tierra del Fuego are strengthening cooperation on seismic and tsunami risk management. Specialists from both sides of the border have been exchanging expertise to improve community and institutional preparedness for large-scale emergencies.

Juan Carlos Andrades, director general of Chile’s National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred), noted that the initiative aims to shift focus from mere response to proactive mitigation and preparation. The collaboration emphasizes the importance of coordination between civil society, public entities, and the business sector. This effort follows a previous incident where a strong earthquake in the Drake Passage caused confusion in Ushuaia regarding response protocols while populations in Cabo de Hornos were already mobilizing.

In Chile, the National Seismological Center continues to monitor frequent seismic activity caused by the movement of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. Senapred has issued safety guidelines for earthquakes, advising citizens to remain calm, seek sturdy shelter, disconnect utilities, and stay clear of buildings and power lines when outdoors.
