Chile Approves First Lake Villarrica Decontamination Plan
Chile's Contraloría General approved the first decontamination plan for Lake Villarrica, establishing specific mitigation measures and assigning responsibilities to both public and private sectors. The plan is intended to be incorporated into the 2027 budget and aims to improve water quality and restore ecological factors in the lake.
Pucón mayor Sebastián Álvarez welcomed the approval, describing it as a historic and long‑awaited step for the community. Councilor Emilio Ulloa, president of the municipal Environment Commission, echoed the optimism, emphasizing that joint effort among authorities, businesses, and residents will be essential for the plan’s success and the protection of the region’s natural heritage.
