Paso Pehuenche crossing stays open; concession study to modernize route

The Cristo Redentor and Pehuenche border crossings between Argentina and Chile are currently operational. Cristo Redentor permits private vehicles, passenger transport and freight trucks with hours 09:00‑21:00 northbound and 08:00‑20:00 southbound, while Pehuenche runs 09:00‑18:00 for all vehicle types. Weather forecasts predict stable conditions early in the week, with possible snow and winds later.

Chile’s Directorate of Borders and Limits has placed the Pehuenche pass among six priority corridors for a feasibility study that could lead to a concession of its customs complex. Governor Pedro Pablo Álvarez‑Salamanca called the move a “historic advance,” noting its alignment with presidential priorities. The study will assess infrastructure upgrades intended to improve regional trade, tourism and binational connectivity.
