Chile authorities announce safe routes for Desierto Florido tourism

Authorities in Chile have announced four authorized road routes to facilitate safe access to the Desierto Florido (Flowering Desert) in the Atacama region. The Ministry of Public Works, through its Regional Directorate of Highways, is providing guidance for travelers in the Copiapó and Huasco provinces to navigate the area following recent heavy rains.

Key routes include connections from Route 5 to the Desierto Florido National Park, Barranquilla, Bahía Salada, and the Llanos de Challe National Park. Officials urge visitors to plan trips during daylight hours, respect all signage, and only stop in designated safe areas to avoid endangering themselves or other motorists on Route 5 North.

In conjunction with these logistical updates, the Chilquinta Group, the Valles del Desierto concessionaire, and the Municipality of Vallenar have launched the “Mira, Disfruta y Cuida” (Look, Enjoy, and Care) campaign. This initiative promotes responsible tourism by encouraging visitors to use official viewpoints, such as the Desierto Florido Lookout, and strictly prohibiting the trampling or picking of flowers to protect the natural heritage.
