Quilicura chemical plant fire prompts government closure order
A fire erupted at the Panimex chemical plant in Quilicura on the night of Tuesday, triggered by an ammonia leak that caused explosions and a large plume of toxic smoke. More than 35 fire companies and roughly 250‑300 volunteers, including units from Maipú, fought the blaze for over ten hours before it was brought under control. The incident forced the suspension of classes in local schools and prompted health warnings about air quality.
The regional health authority opened a sanitary sumario, and Health Minister May Chomali announced that the government will seek the permanent closure of Panimex and impose heavy fines. Mayor Paulina Bobadilla of Quilicura also called for the plant’s shutdown, noting that similar fires occurred at the facility in 2013, 2014 and 2017. The fire highlighted deficiencies in emergency protocols and led to a broader investigation of the company's compliance with safety regulations.
