Chile begins process to replace F-5 fighter jets

Chile has officially begun the process to replace its F-5 fighter jets, which have been in service for 50 years. Defense Minister Fernando Barros announced the move in Punta Arenas as part of a broader strategic renewal of the country's armed forces. While the specific replacement model, timeline, and budget for the F-5s have not yet been disclosed, the ministry confirmed that the replacement of the Bell UH-1H helicopter fleet has already been approved and funded.

The helicopter replacement, part of the Chilean Air Force’s ‘Pantera’ project, aims to acquire 14 light helicopters to succeed the UH-1H fleet, which will reach the end of its 60-year operational cycle in 2026. The new aircraft must support search and rescue, medical evacuation, and administrative transport missions.

Additional modernization efforts include upgrading Leopard 1 tanks in Magallanes and initiating studies to integrate unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and secure communications into the Army. The plan also focuses on strengthening Antarctic presence by improving infrastructure at the Teniente Marsh runway, Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva Base, and Bahía Fildes pier. The Ministry of Defense noted that strategic investment is projected to nearly double in 2026.
