Chile calls for skilled workforce as data center sector expands

Chile is building a new strategic digital infrastructure, with 37 data centers already operating and 15 additional projects under development. While the facilities store and process data for banks, hospitals, commerce, public services and AI systems, officials stress that the hardware alone is insufficient.

The government and industry leaders argue that a trained workforce is essential. They highlight the need for electrical technicians, climate‑control specialists, cybersecurity experts, automation engineers, energy‑efficiency professionals, cloud service operators, critical‑infrastructure staff, data scientists and AI specialists. The push includes expanding technical education, upskilling current workers, and extending training opportunities to regions with limited access, aiming to turn the data‑center boom into broader economic and social benefits for Chile.
