Chile cancels $400 million infrastructure contracts awarded to Azvi
The Chilean government has officially canceled the provisional award of two major infrastructure contracts to the Spanish group Azvi, through its subsidiary Electro-Cointer. The projects, valued at approximately 400 million dollars, involved the development of the Ruta 160 and Ruta 150 public transport corridors and the Concepción-Talcahuano highway in the Biobío region.
President José Antonio Kast cited budgetary reasons for the decision, announcing that the state will instead execute the works directly through government agencies. This move rejects a proposal from Azvi to reduce the project costs by 20%, which would have lowered the investment from 400 million to 320 million dollars. The original contracts included a 20-year exploitation period with works planned through 2031.
The decision has raised concerns among Spanish infrastructure firms operating in Chile, including Sacyr, OHLA, Abertis, and Grupo San José. Industry experts and the Institute for Governance and Applied Economics have warned that this policy shift could cause reputational damage to Chile's investment climate and potentially lead to project delays of up to four years.
