Chile celebrates Farmer Day, honors rural communities and local farmers

On July 28, Chile observes the Day of the Peasant and Farmer, a national commemoration that recognises the social, economic and cultural contributions of millions of rural workers. The observance traces its roots to the 1967 agrarian reforms (Law 16.640 and Law 16.625) that reshaped the countryside, and is coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Instituto de Desarrollo Agropecuario (INDAP). The day highlights the sector’s role in food security, tradition preservation and regional identity, while also drawing attention to climate, water‑scarcity and modernisation challenges.

In the southern commune of Dalcahue, officials gathered in Tenaún to honour seven farmers who exemplify these values. Mayor Alejandra Villegas presented awards, a video tribute and a seed‑exchange ceremony, underscoring municipal commitment to support rural development and sustain local heritage.
