Chile celebrates National Day in Chennai amid growing India trade ties
The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Chile in Chennai celebrated the 216th anniversary of Chile’s independence at the ITC Grand Chola. The event was hosted by Honorary Consul Sunita Shahaney and addressed by Juan Angulo, the Ambassador of Chile to India.
Ambassador Angulo highlighted the growing relationship between Chile and India, noting that bilateral trade exceeded US$5.6 billion in 2025. The two nations are currently working toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement to deepen cooperation in sectors such as trade, investment, critical minerals, renewable energy, technology, and agriculture. Additionally, opportunities for collaboration were identified within Tamil Nadu’s automobile, engineering, and healthcare industries.
The celebration also honored Mrs. Shahaney for her 27 years of service as Honorary Consul in Chennai, a role she has held since April 1999. Her work has focused on strengthening Chilean engagement in southern India through diplomatic visits, business connections, and cultural promotion.
