Chile: Protests mark 7th anniversary of 2019 social uprising

Thousands of people gathered in Santiago, Chile, to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the 2019 social uprising. While the marches began peacefully with cultural activities and tributes, they later escalated into violent clashes between groups of hooded protesters and security forces.

Authorities reported at least 29 detainees and several injuries among Carabineros officers. Incidents included the use of stones and Molotov cocktails by protesters, prompting police to deploy water cannons and tear gas. In the Pedro Aguirre Cerda commune, a public transport bus was set on fire, resulting in total damage to the vehicle.

The demonstrations were largely directed against the economic policies of President José Antonio Kast, specifically targeting fiscal adjustments and cuts to social programs. Public sentiment remains divided; while some view the unrest as criminal disorder, a survey by Criteria indicates that 68% of Chileans believe the original social demands from 2019 remain unresolved.
