Chile completes new maritime ramp on Isla Alao, boosting Chiloé connectivity

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) in Chile's Los Lagos region has delivered the provisional handover of a new maritime ramp on Isla Alao in the commune of Quinchao. The project, executed by the Directorate of Port Works, cost over $4.298 billion Chilean pesos and features a 127‑meter‑long, 7‑meter‑wide structure built on pilings, solar lighting, improved access plazas and a 40‑square‑metre shelter.

The ramp is intended to enhance transport for island residents, freight carriers, public services and visitors, improving safety and reliability amid tidal variations. Regional MOP minister Jairo Quinteros Mayne highlighted that the infrastructure will “optimize family movements, facilitate the transport of goods and services, and improve the quality of life” for the community in the Chiloé archipelago.
