Chile copper supply threatened by weather and strikes

Chile, the world's largest copper producer responsible for approximately 27% of the global supply, is facing a significant convergence of supply disruptions. The mining sector is currently grappling with extreme weather in the northern regions, labor strikes at at least three major operations, and unplanned shutdowns at key sites including Escondida, Collahuasi, and Los Pelambres.

Analysts suggest that recent copper price increases may not yet fully reflect the magnitude of the accumulating supply issues. The combination of intense Altiplanic storms and operational setbacks threatens the annual production of roughly 5.8 million tonnes, creating tension in the global metal market.
