Chile Deputy Videla Urges Temporary Closure of Bolivia Border Amid Vehicle Theft Surge

Deputy Sebastián Videla, representing Chile's Antofagasta Region, warned that a recent spike in vehicle thefts—particularly trucks being driven across the border into Bolivia—requires urgent action. He called for reinforced controls at border crossings and suggested a temporary shutdown of the Chile‑Bolivia frontier until the criminal networks are disrupted.

Videla noted that several thefts have occurred in the past days despite police efforts, and recalled a prior delegation to Bolivia that succeeded in recovering some stolen vehicles. He urged stronger coordination between Chilean and Bolivian authorities and pledged to keep supporting victims and pursuing the return of stolen assets.
