Chile dispatches senior consular chief to Caracas to restart services

Director General of Consular Affairs Hernán Núñez arrived in Caracas on Sunday to begin reactivating consular relations between Chile and Venezuela, following a roadmap announced by both governments to normalize bilateral ties after nearly two years of diplomatic rupture.

Núñez will review the administrative and operational steps needed to reopen public services, including issuance of identity documents and passports, legalisation of certificates and titles, and emergency consular assistance. Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna said restoring consular assistance for the roughly 25,000 Chileans living in Venezuela is a priority and marks the first step toward full restoration of bilateral relations. Meetings with Venezuelan authorities are scheduled.
