Chile economy faces recession risk amid rising inflation and unemployment

Chile is facing significant economic headwinds, with official data indicating the country is on the verge of a recession following two consecutive quarters of economic contraction. The unemployment rate has climbed to 9.5%, marking its highest level in five years, while annual inflation has accelerated to 4.1% due to rising costs in food and transportation.

In response to these unfavorable prospects, the Central Bank of Chile has lowered its economic growth forecast for 2026, reducing the projection from a previous range of 1% to 1.75% down to between 0.25% and 0.75%. Central Bank President Rosanna Costa noted in a press conference that the current economic fragility might be more persistent than initially expected.

The rising cost of living is impacting even the most affordable staples. In Santiago, the price of the 'completo'—a traditional and widely consumed Chilean hot dog—has risen from 2,500 pesos to between 3,500 and 4,000 pesos, reflecting the broader inflationary pressure on the population.
