Chile, Ecuador, and GCC reaffirm support for Moroccan Sahara autonomy plan

During meetings of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee in New York, several nations and regional blocs reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and its autonomy proposal.

Chile expressed support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, describing the 2007 autonomy plan as a fair, lasting, and acceptable political solution consistent with UN Security Council resolutions. Similarly, Ecuador characterized the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the “only serious, credible, and realistic proposal” to achieve a permanent settlement, while calling for all parties to engage in negotiations in good faith.

Representing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Bahrain reaffirmed the unified position of the Gulf states, emphasizing that any final resolution must respect Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The GCC highlighted UN Security Council Resolution 2797, viewing the autonomy initiative as a pivotal step toward a realistic and applicable solution within the UN-led political process.
