Chile evaluates E10 gasoline proposal to reduce fuel costs

Chile's Ministry of Energy is evaluating a proposal to introduce E10 gasoline, a blend consisting of 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol. The initiative aims to diversify fuel supplies, reduce carbon intensity, and mitigate the impact of rising international oil prices. Implementation could potentially save the country approximately US$107 million annually in fuel supply costs.

To adopt this blend, the state-owned company ENAP would need to invest roughly US$10.8 million to adapt refineries, terminals, and storage systems. A gradual transition toward 10% or even 15% ethanol blends could be realized by 2030, aligning with the ministry's roadmap to decrease emissions.

However, the Ministry of Energy has clarified that there is currently no formal official proposal being processed or evaluated to modify gasoline composition. The ministry issued a statement denying that any formal internal or external initiative is underway to commercialize ethanol-blended gasoline, addressing recent reports regarding the potential measure.
